For most music lovers in Ghana, we love our stars and we also follow the celebrities of the country, USA, whose street music Hip hop, inspired our youth music of today, Hiplife which was orginally branded by Grandfather,Reggie Rockstone. For those of us who are following International street music, the name IYAZ, is a phenomenon. On the streets of NYC , New Jersey, Atlanta, Philly, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Rochester, DC, Baltimore, Alexandria, Oklahoma, New London etc….everybody is singing about the music of this young guy who is reported to be associated with our own Ghanaian versatile scholar cum musician, NINO. This world super star is already talking of collaborating with NINO in a big concert in Ghana soon. Yes, IYAZ is doing to NINO what Sean Kingston of USA did for him. Discovering Talents and making them BIG. The question is who is this IYAZ……almost pronounced as ” Ayasse”……..or AJAZZ………. Keep reading: Wait a minute! Keidran Jones (born 15 April 1987), better known by his stage name Iyaz, is a singer signed with the record label Beluga Heights Records from the British Virgin Islands. He is known for his singles “Replay”, “Solo” and “Pretty Girls”. He released his debut albumReplay in 2009.
Iyaz was born in 1987 to a musical family. He grew up in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.[1] Iyaz studied digital recording at New England Institute of Technology and recorded music. Island Girls found radio success in the Caribbean.[2]Sean Kingston found Iyaz through his MySpace page in 2008[3] and later signed him a recording contract with Time Is Money/Beluga Heights. Michael Nguyen introduced him to producer J. R. Rotem. He released “Replay” in 2010, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #1 in many other territories, including the United Kingdom.[1] His second single “Solo” was released in February 2010, and peaked at #32 on the Hot 100. He also took part in recording the Haiti charity single, “We Are the World 25 for Haiti”. His debut album, Replay was released in 2010, and he was also featured on Charice’s single “Pyramid”. In an interview with HitQuarters, producer and Beluga Heights head J. R. Rotem described Iyaz’s creative perfectionism:
“Whereas others might work on several songs in one day, he might sit there and work on one song for days. The end result that he gets is usually an absolute gem, so heartfelt and genuine.”[4]
Iyaz also appeared on the fourth season of Hannah Montana, Hannah Montana Forever and made a song with Miley Cyrus called “Gonna Get This”, which is featured on the Hannah Montana Forever soundtrack album. He is also featured in the upcoming film 21 Coconuts. Iyaz is now working on his second album but no release date or title has yet been confirmed. He has released a song together with Travie McCoy, titled “Pretty Girls”. He was featured in Big Time Rush’s song “If I Ruled the World”. In 2011, he recorded a track titled “You’re My Only Shorty” for Demi Lovato. The official studio version with Iyaz appeared on Lovato’s album Unbroken.
